Blown-in insulation

Blown-in insulation, also known as loose-fill insulation, is a popular choice for insulating attics, walls, and crawl spaces. It’s comprised of loose fibers that are pneumatically blown into place using specialized equipment, filling cavities and gaps effectively. This makes it ideal for irregularly shaped spaces where batts or rigid foam are difficult to install.

Several materials constitute blown-in insulation, each with its own properties:

Fiberglass: A common and cost-effective option. Fiberglass blown-in insulation offers good thermal resistance (R-value) and is relatively easy to work with. However, it can be itchy and requires appropriate safety precautions during installation.

Cellulose: Made from recycled paper products, cellulose insulation is a sustainable and effective choice. It provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation and has a higher R-value per inch compared to fiberglass.

Mineral wool: Derived from rock or slag, mineral wool offers good thermal performance and fire resistance. It’s also moisture-resistant and less prone to settling than some other types of blown-in insulation.

The installation process involves using a specialized machine that blows the insulation into the desired area. This allows for even distribution and complete filling of cavities which is key to maximizing thermal efficiency. The depth of the insulation is crucial; insufficient depth reduces its effectiveness.

Advantages of blown-in insulation include its adaptability to various spaces, excellent coverage of irregular areas, and relatively low cost compared to other insulation types. It’s also a good choice for retrofitting existing structures, allowing for easy addition of insulation without major structural modifications.

However, potential disadvantages include the need for specialized equipment for installation—making DIY challenging—and potential settling over time, particularly with fiberglass. Moisture control is also important; improper installation can lead to moisture accumulation and related issues. Choosing the right type and ensuring professional installation are key to maximizing the benefits of blown-in insulation.
